A History of Watches
A watch is a timepiece that is traditionally worn on the wrist. Wristwatches are the most common kinds of watches, but watches also come in many other forms. The first watches were of course, mechanical, and as time evolved, along came digital watches. The first digital watch was developed in 1970.
Believe it or not, wristwatches were not always commonly worn, and were originally only worn by women in the early 1900s. At this time they were only considered a trend. Men only carried watches that were attached to chains, and placed in the pocket. These are known as pocket watches. Eventually wristwatches started to be worn by men when pocket watches were found to be too impractical during war times.

What is the movement?
The movement, when speaking about watches is the mechanism that measured the time and displays it. Movements can either be mechanical, electronic, or a combination of both. The watches we wear today are mostly electronic with mechanical hands for indicating the time.
Quartz Movement
Quartz watches are powered by batteries. An electrical current is transmitted through a quartz crystal. Quartz watches are highly accurate
Automatic Movement
Automatic watches are powered by movement of the wrist. They store energy for up to 48 hours and must be regularly worn or it will stop working. If it stops, the watch must be reset.
Mechanical Movement
Mechanical watches are wound by hand. These watches are often less accurate than quartz watches because they lose several seconds everyday depending on how often they are wound.

What is a chronograph?
A chronograph is a type of watch that can be used as a stopwatch as well as a regular display watch. These kinds of watches have a second hand that can be started, stopped, and turned back to zero.
Analog or Digital?
An analog is a traditional watch with a numbered dial. Mounted upon this are a small rotating hour hand, and a larger rotating minute hand. Some watches include a third hand which indicated the seconds.
A Digital watch has an electronic display that simply shows the time as a number. These watches are generally much easier to read at a quick speed. When collecting, most collectors will opt to go for an analog watch rather than a digital watch.
